Petrolatum (Vaseline) Emulsions play a rolein many areas.
The authors of this series of petrolatumstudy found that Silsurf J208-612 is the most effective emulsifier. The productseems to be able to handle various ratios of petrolatum to water. Changing theratio of petrolatum to water will result in products with very differentproperties. This technology can be extended to cover many other oils, includingisomeric hydrocarbons and esters. The efficacy of other Silsurf surfactants wasstudied using the same formulation in another study. The emulsions made withSilsurf J208-612, Silsurf J208-412, and Silsurf J208-212 all have goodproperties, whereas Silsurf J208-812 produces a product that resembles agranule with visible petrolatum particles. It appears that starting materialswith higher values of HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic balance) are not suitable forthe production of better emulsions with petrolatum or petrolatum.
Since the ratio of water to petrolatum isclose to 1: 1, the properties of the emulsion are affected by the chosenemulsifier.
